We have already posted about this several times, but in the last weeks the Mobile Info Team has witnessed a number of people getting into a lot of trouble because they didn't have their white card with them. We can not stress enough the fact that it is absolutely essential that you have a legal identification document with you ALL THE TIME! This can for example be a white card if you are an asylum seeker, a police note ("kharti") if you are still trying to apply for asylum or your residence permit or travel document, when you are already granted asylum. In case you get controlled by the police and don't have your identification document with you, you might face big troubles. You might be arrested and perhaps not get a chance to prove soon that you are legally residing in Greece. Also more and more reports are reaching the Mobile Info Team, that in the Northeast of Greece the Greek police is pushing people back to Turkey if they find them without a white card or another identification document. We even heard of people getting pushed back to Turkey that were in possession of legal documents, but were too close to the border. To avoid all this, please ALWAYS carry your identification document with you and if possible try to avoid to get closer than 50 kilometers from the Turkish border.
Since Spring 2017 asylum seekers who traveled illegally from Greece to another European country, can be send back to Greece. However in practice nearly nobody was send back in 2017. According to a statement of the Greek Asylum Service, Greece has received nearly 2.000 requests to take people back, but only accepted 68 of these requests. And just one of this 68 had so far been actually transferred to Greece. Also in October a German court had overruled a transfer decision to Greece, because in the opinion of the court the conditions in Greece do still not meet the necessary standards of the European Union. Of course this might change and nobody knows if in the future more people will be send back. In theory every person who illegally entered Greek territory after the 15th of March 2017 or who has applied for asylum in Greece after the 15th of March 2017 and continues to travel illegally to another country, can be send back to Greece.
If you do family reunification through the embassy to Germany, it is a necessity to legalize all the relevant documents in the German embassy in Beirut. The Mobile Info Team has reached a lot of reports, that tricksters are trying to take advantage of this situation. They are offering to help legalize the documents, but only for a huge amount of money. Or they are offering their services for a low price and then later are threatening to only give the documents back, if a lot of money is paid. Please keep in mind, that in general legalizing documents is for free, if you can prove that the legalization is needed for a family reunification. Please be really, really careful whom you trust with helping you with your documents. Don't give your documents in the hands of people or organisations you don't know! First of all, you have to let the Greek Asylum Service know, that you want to apply for asylum in Greece. Unfortunately you can not just go to their office. Normally the only way to let the Asylum Service know, is to call Skype. Be aware that it might be very difficult to get through on Skype and might take quite some time. According to your language, you have to call at a certain time slot to a certain Skype ID. You can find the newest Skype schedule here: http://asylo.gov.gr/en/?page_id=987
Please click on the first link on the page and a multilingual document will open, showing you the time table. Be aware that the time table might change. So check from time to time, if it is still up to date. First distinguish if you are in Athens or in the rest of Greece and select the correct timetable. Then look for your language and find the dates and times you can call and the correct Skype ID to call. If you don't have Skype on your phone, download it. You need to be in a place with very good internet connection, because you will need to do a video call so the Asylum Service can make a picture of you. Some NGOs or community centers offer help and support, in case you don't have the possibility to do this or if you need help with making the Skype call. If you can manage to get through to the Asylum Service on Skype, you will get an appointment to apply at their regional office.ι
Please be aware that this post is only for people arriving to Greece through the land border. If you have arrived to Greece through one of the Greek islands, the situation is different and you can not call Skype. The Mobile Info Team will make a separate post about it.
The Greek television station ERT is offering also a short news bulletin in Arabic. It includes news concerning refugees and a weather forecast and is normally around 90 seconds long. Afterwards the video is posted on the Facebook page of ERTinternational
