LEGALIZING DOCUMENTS AT THE GERMAN EMBASSY IN BEIRUT: WATCH OUT FOR TRICKSTERS!

If you do family reunification through the embassy to Germany, it is a necessity to legalize all the relevant documents in the German embassy in Beirut. The Mobile Info Team has reached a lot of reports, that tricksters are trying to take advantage of this situation. They are offering to help legalize the documents, but only for a huge amount of money. Or they are offering their services for a low price and then later are threatening to only give the documents back, if a lot of money is paid. Please keep in mind, that in general legalizing documents is for free, if you can prove that the legalization is needed for a family reunification. Please be really, really careful whom you trust with helping you with your documents. Don't give your documents in the hands of people or organisations you don't know! I JUST ARRIVED TO GREECE THROUGH THE LAND BORDER AND I WANT TO APPLY FOR ASYLUM. HOW CAN I DO THAT?

First of all, you have to let the Greek Asylum Service know, that you want to apply for asylum in Greece. Unfortunately you can not just go to their office. Normally the only way to let the Asylum Service know, is to call Skype. Be aware that it might be very difficult to get through on Skype and might take quite some time. According to your language, you have to call at a certain time slot to a certain Skype ID. You can find the newest Skype schedule here: http://asylo.gov.gr/en/?page_id=987
Please click on the first link on the page and a multilingual document will open, showing you the time table. Be aware that the time table might change. So check from time to time, if it is still up to date. First distinguish if you are in Athens or in the rest of Greece and select the correct timetable. Then look for your language and find the dates and times you can call and the correct Skype ID to call. If you don't have Skype on your phone, download it. You need to be in a place with very good internet connection, because you will need to do a video call so the Asylum Service can make a picture of you. Some NGOs or community centers offer help and support, in case you don't have the possibility to do this or if you need help with making the Skype call. If you can manage to get through to the Asylum Service on Skype, you will get an appointment to apply at their regional office.ι
Please be aware that this post is only for people arriving to Greece through the land border. If you have arrived to Greece through one of the Greek islands, the situation is different and you can not call Skype. The Mobile Info Team will make a separate post about it.

GERMANY'S FUTURE GOVERNMENT WANTS TO LIMIT NUMBER OF REFUGEES ARRIVING TO GERMANY

In Germany the conservatives of Angela Merkel and the socialdemocrats had in the last week a discussion if it would make sense to form a government together. They agreed to start official coalition negotiations in the next weeks. That means that they are still quite far away from really forming a government and it is still unclear if this will really happen. But in case they will govern the country, they plan to limit the number of refugees arriving to Germany to a maximum 220,000 a year. Also they want to limit the number of family reunification over the embassy from people that have subsidiary protection (a residence permit for one year) to 1,000 a month. Please keep in mind that this is not relevant for refugees in Germany that have a three years residence permit (refugee status) and it also not so relevant if you have family members in Greece. Because for asylum seekers in Greece with family members in Germany there is the possibility to make family reunification through the Greek Asylum Service. For the difference between this two procedures, have a look here: http://bit.ly/2DfbE5T
Also remember what we said before, that this so far are only plans that will be carried out, in case the parties will form the government together. The Mobile Info Team will keep you updated about this topic.

ARE THERE ANY REASONS WHY THE ASYLUM SERVICE COULD THROW ME OUT OF THE ASYLUM PROCEDURE?

When you apply for asylum in Greece, there are some obligations you have to comply with. If you fail to do so, the Asylum Service can discontinue the examination of your asylum procedure. This can happen if you don't renew your white card in time. The Asylum Service can also stop the examination of your application if you don't go to your asylum interview and you don't have a valid reason for not going like for example, that you are in hospital, because you are sick. Also it is written in the law, that if you don't hand over your passport from your country of origin and the Asylum Service finds out about it, your application will be discontinued. If the examination of your application has been stopped for any of these reasons, you have the possibility to request the Asylum Service to continue to examine your application. But please be aware that you can do this only once and only if your application hasn't been suspended for more than nine months. In general it is advisable to comply with the obligations you have as an asylum seeker, in order not to get into unnecessary complications.

CAN I CHECK IF MY RESIDENCE PERMIT OR TRAVEL DOCUMENT IS READY TO PICK UP?

If you are granted asylum in Greece, you will get a residence permit, showing that you are allowed to legally reside in Greece. If you got refugee status, you can also apply for a travel document, allowing you to travel to other countries (but not live there!!). Unfortunately it takes at the moment a lot of time until a residence permit or a travel document for refugees is issued. But in the internet you can check, if these documents are ready. On the website of the Greek Asylum Service frequently lists are published on which it is possible to see if a residence permit or a travel document for refugees is ready to be picked up. To see if your residence permit is ready please click here: http://asylo.gov.gr/en/?page_id=1292
To see if there is a decision on your application for a travel document, please click here: http://asylo.gov.gr/en/?page_id=548
To see if your travel document is ready, please click here: http://asylo.gov.gr/en/?page_id=1289
The website unfortunately is only in English or Greek. But it is still possible to check even if you speak a different language. On the website, you just need to click on of the link. Each link leads you to a document with all the case numbers for which the residence permit or travel document can be picked up. Your case number you can find for example in your white card or on the paper you got from the Greek Asylum Service when you were granted your asylum.
