WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH FAMILY REUNIFICATION TO GERMANY AT THE MOMENT?

There are two ways to do family reunification from Greece to Germany. One way is through the Greek Asylum Service (through the so called Dublin 3 system) and the other way is through the Embassy. Family reunification through the Greek Asylum Service is continuing as normal, however due to a large number of flights being booked this month for people approved in March 2017 Himalaya Travel has suspended bookings for a few days. Family reunification through the Embassy is also continuing but since March 2016 it is only possible if the family member in Germany has refugee status, that means a three year residence permit. If the family member has only one year of residence permit (subsidiary protection), it is not possible for family members abroad to apply for a visa to be reunited with someone in Germany through the Embassy. This restriction was supposed to be in place until March 2018 but recently there were discussions in Germany to prolong the restriction until March 2020. We will update you if this restriction changes. If you are considering family reunification through the embassy remember it is quite a complex process so please check with a lawyer or legal adviser to see if you meet the requirements to apply.
