DIRECTOR OF GREEK HOTSPOTS ASKED TO RESIGN AFTER ACCUSING MINISTRY OF MISMANAGING FUNDS FOR REFUGEE CAMPS

The Greek Minister for Migration Policy, Dimitris Vitsas, has asked for the resignation of the Director of the Reception and Identification Service (RIS), Andreas Iliopoulos. Mr. Iliopoulos previously stated in an interview with a newspaper that European funds which had been given for Greek refugee camps had been mismanaged. Among other claims, he stated that one million Euros were allocated to fixing the sewage system in Moria and still no progress has been made. Mr. Iliopoulos then asked state prosecutors to intervene and start an investigation, to see if the law had been broken. He also stated, that he will inform the European authorities about the situation of migrants in Greece. Minister Vitsas claimed that these were false allegations and asked Director Iliopoulos to resign.
As director of the Reception and Identification Service, Mr. Iliopoulos has been responsible for the hotspots on the Greek islands and at Evros.
