WHY ARE PUBLIC SERVICES CLOSED ON FRIDAY AND MONDAY?

This weekend (6th of April to 9th of April) is Orthodox Easter, which is one of the most important Christian holidays in Greece. The Asylum Service and other government offices will be closed on Friday and Monday and then reopen again normally on Tuesday. Supermarkets in big cities might be open in the afternoon on Friday and during the first half of the day on Saturday. This might be different in smaller towns or villages. On Monday, supermarkets will be closed. On Friday, as part of the Easter celebrations, Christians will take part to a procession at night with people carrying the epitaph, symbolizing the coffin of Christ, followed with mournful drum beats, candles, and bells tolling. In the night from Saturday to Sunday, at midnight, the resurrection of Christ is celebrated with drum beats and fireworks. Easter is a family holiday, and people in Greece traditionally eat roast lamb on Sunday.ι
