I HEARD THAT CANADA WILL ACCEPT 1 MILLION IMMIGRANTS OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS. IS THIS TRUE?

It is true that the Canadian government has announced that Canada plans to welcome 1 million immigrants over the next three years. However, the majority of these places will be prioritized for skilled workers and their families who could improve the Canadian economy. There is a plan that around 30,000 refugees per year are to be resettled in Canada. These places are very oversubscribed and it is very difficult to get one of them. It is important to understand that refugees are not able to apply for resettlement to Canada themselves. Only through an organisation like UNHCR or through sponsorship by at least 5 Canadian citizens can a refugee be referred to the Canadian government. The referred person must already be recognized as a refugee by UNHCR or by a state. Unfortunately, UNHCR will not refer from countries inside the European Union like Greece. UNHCR typically refers only from countries with little protection for refugees, for example Turkey or Lebanon. You may have heard about the case of a Saudi Arabian girl being granted resettlement to Canada after she fled the country to Thailand. The Canadian government considered her as a very exceptional case and is not part of the standard resettlement plan of Canada.ι
