PORTUGAL PROMISES TO RELOCATE UP TO 1,000 ASYLUM SEEKERS AND/OR REFUGEES FROM GREECE

Portugal and Greece have finalized their agreement to relocate up to 1000 people from Greece to Portugal. This will include asylum seekers that have a very high chance of getting a positive decision as well as people that have already received a positive decision in their asylum procedure. Portugal will initially receive 100 people then the program might be extended to up to 1000. The two responsible ministers from Greece and Portugal had generally agreed on this already last autumn. Now after several months of negotiation the Greek Asylum Service and the Portuguese authorities have signed a formal agreement. The transfers should be carried out in the “upcoming months” with the help of IOM. Some details have not been confirmed, such as how people will be selected and when exactly the first transfers will begin. We will let you know here on our page as soon as we have additional information.
