2018 has seen a sharp increase in arrests of asylum seekers in Greece who were attempting to illegally leave Greece with a fake passport or ID card. This trend is also continuing this year. In only a few weeks, 170 people have been arrested in the airport of Crete. If somebody gets arrested due to an attempt to illegally leave Greece with a fake passport or a passport which is not theirs, they can face several issues. The public prosecutor will normally press charges that usually result in a sentence by the court. Depending on the court and whether it is the first arrest, there is a chance that the sentence might be suspended (that means that the person will probably not have go to prison). It is then still possible to continue the asylum procedure. But, if later in the process somebody is granted refugee status, they will not be able to receive a travel document if they have been convicted of the use of fake documents or using a passport/ID which is not theirs.
