I HEARD THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH GETTING AN AMKA (SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER). IS IT TRUE?

Yes, it is true. At the moment the responsible authority (the ΚΕΠ), is not issuing AMKAs for third-country nationals any more. This means if you want to apply for an AMKA, you will at the moment not be able to obtain one. If you already have one, your AMKA still remains valid. An AMKA is the Greek Social Security Number. You need an AMKA to access a number of services, including the Greek healthcare system or to get employment. There have been problems regarding the issuance of AMKAs for asylum seekers and refugees for quite some time. A decision by the former Greek government to solve these issues has unfortunately been overturned by the new government. As a result, the issuance of new AMKAs for third-country nationals is on hold. It is expected that the new government will issue a decision or law soon to address this problem. We will keep you updated about any changes in the future.ι
