Over the last few weeks Greek media have reported that the police in Athens and Thessaloniki have stepped up controls on foreigners and are arresting those who don't have a legal permit to stay in Greece. For example, yesterday 71 people without papers were arrested in Thessaloniki. The police in Thessaloniki announced that these police actions will continue ''with undiminished intensity''. Also in Athens there appears to be plans to increase controls with 130 police officers patrolling metro stations. We cannot stress enough the fact that it is absolutely essential that you have a legal identification document with you at all times! This can be a white card, a police note (''kharti''), your residence permit or travel document. If you are controlled by the police and you don't have your identification document with you, you may face big problems. You might get arrested and it might take time until you get the chance to prove you are legally residing in Greece.
