General terms

Protecting the personal data of anyone using this website and our services is fundamental to MIT. We have taken all necessary steps to protect your personal data and to process it only to the extent necessary to provide our services. Our Data Protection Policy fully complies with the existing national and European legislation and, in particular, with the General Data Protection Regulation (hereafter GDPR).

The Data Protection Policy and the Terms of Use of the website describe the method by which we collect and process personal data, which is absolutely necessary for the provision of our services and for your browsing, as well as the way we ensure a high level of protection for you. The following passages inform you of all your rights regarding the collection and processing of your personal data and the ways in which you can make use of these rights.

The information and data you share with us are used by MIT to communicate with you promptly and effectively, respond to your queries and requests, and process your donations should you choose to support our work. 

Gathering and processing your personal data

Depending on the relevant processing purposes we collect the following kind of data:
(a) data provided in communications through MIT’s helplines and other internally administered lines; (b) data provided during a donation process; (c) data provided through email communication; (d) data provided through the online contact form on our website.

Data provided through MIT’s helplines, other internally administered lines and email communication may include the information you choose to share with us in the course of your communication, depending on the nature and purpose of your communication. 

For online donations, after completing the required fields and clicking the “Donate” button at the bottom of the online form, you will be automatically redirected to the relevant payment provider’s website. MIT is not responsible for the processing of your personal data by the payment provider following your redirection to its website.

When completing any form on our website, you will be asked to provide your full name and email address. If you choose to make a donation to support our work, we will also store the amount you wish to donate and the platform through which you make your donation for transaction identification and security purposes. 

We use the personal information you provide to us through any means of communication with MIT for the following purposes: (1) to respond to your queries and requests; (2) to keep you informed about our activities, where you have indicated that you wish to receive such information; (3) to process and administer your donation; and (4) for fundraising purposes. 

Our website is designed to allow users to browse and access its content without having to disclose their identity, unless they choose to do so. We may ask users to provide personal information when they wish to make a donation to support our work and/or submit a query through the online contact form available on our website.

In which cases we have a lawful reason to process your personal data

In accordance with the requirements of the GDPR, MIT is committed to ensuring that the collection, storage and processing of your personal data are carrieGatd out lawfully, fairly and transparently. We process personal data only where there is a lawful basis for doing so and only to the extent necessary for the purposes described above. 

In particular, we process your personal data only in the following cases: (a) when you have given us your free, specific, explicit and fully informed consent for each specific processing purpose (for example, when you contact us through the online form); (b) when you share information with us through our helplines, so that we can ensure that we provide our services appropriately; (c) for the purposes of research and advocacy, to the extent that this is necessary and, in any event, provided that appropriate security measures are in place to prevent the disclosure of personal information; (d) when we are required to process your personal data for the purposes of a particular contract (for example, if you choose to make an online donation); (e) where there is a legitimate interest (for example, in order to comply with tax obligations). 

How long we keep your data for

The data you provide will be retained by MIT for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes outlined above and will be erased promptly thereafter, unless we are required by law to retain it (for example, to comply with tax legislation), or there is another lawful interest that justifies its retention. 

Where we send your data

Please be advised that for the full protection of your personal data, we have ensured that those who work for our purposes, will provide you with the security level mentioned in the Policy hereof.

Furthermore, we may share your personal data with third parties where you have expressly consented to us doing so for clearly specified reasons, among others, including referrals to another organisation for the purpose of receiving support. In this case, MIT shall be liable for the processing of your personal data and shall determine the terms of data processing by third parties based on specifically laid out conditions and explicit confidentiality clauses, so that the other data processors may provide you with the same protection level as the Policy hereof. 

Except as described above, we will not share your personal data with any other third party without your prior consent, unless we are required to do so by law (for example, in case of a court order). In all cases, you may at any time exercise your rights provided by the law, which are described in detail below. 

Data of minors

The storage and processing of data relating to minors is restricted to the strict minimum necessary, and any information shared through our helplines is promptly erased where it is no longer necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.

Under the applicable law, you must be at least 16 years of age to use our website. If you are under 16, you should browse the website with the supervision of your parents or legal guardians, or with their consent.

Cookies

MIT’s website is hosted by Squarespace. Our website uses Squarespace cookies to help us improve and update your browsing experience and to enhance the functionality and information available through our website. 

a) What are cookies and which kinds do we use?

Cookies are small text files, usually consisting of letters and numbers, that are stored in the browser you use (such as Chrome, Firefox, etc.) when you visit a website. 

Squarespace places two kinds of cookies on visitors’ browsers:

  • Necessary cookies so visitors can navigate and use key features on your site.

Data protection

MIT is committed to safeguarding and protecting the personal data you share with us through our helplines, email and online contact form. We have adopted procedures that safeguard the personal data you provide us by security measures we have in place. These procedures protect your data from any disclosure, unauthorized access, modification, or loss. 

In the event that, despite the highest level of protection we provide to you, unauthorised persons access your personal data by violating the security measures we have taken, we shall act immediately in order to stop the violation and comply with the GDPR procedure in this regard.

Your rights regarding your data

At any time, you may exercise the following rights under GDPR: (a) the right to access the information you have provided us with and the right to obtain a copy thereof in order to ascertain the lawfulness of the processing; (b) the right to modify your personal data; (c) the right to delete your personal data or to withdraw your consent, unless you are unable to do so due to a contradicting legal obligation; (d) the right to restrict the processing; (e) the right to object in case you disagree with the purposes of the processing; (f) the right to erase information.
